CHOLHOUSE
FARMOUSE
Cholhouse Farmhouse is a standout example of farmhouse restoration in Devon, delivered by RM Builders & Contractors. This 17th-century thatched cottage, built using cob and rubble stone with lime render, suffered extensive fire damage. As a result, the project required a careful and specialist conservation approach.
As a Grade II listed building, the farmhouse demanded a high level of sensitivity. The Conservation Officer set a clear objective to retain as much of the original structure as possible. Therefore, our team focused on stabilising, restoring and rebuilding the property while preserving its historic character.
We worked closely with the appointed surveyor and conservation specialists throughout the project. Together, we assessed the remaining structure and identified elements that could be repaired or reinstated. In addition, we selected materials and methods that matched the original construction. This ensured that all work remained sympathetic to the building’s heritage.
Our team carefully repaired surviving cob walls, timber elements and traditional finishes. Where damage proved too severe, we reinstated features using historically appropriate techniques. As a result, the restored farmhouse retains its original appearance while meeting modern structural standards.
Projects of this nature require patience, skill and attention to detail. Every stage of the restoration followed a conservation-led approach. This allowed us to protect the building’s character while ensuring it remains safe and functional for future use.
The client was extremely pleased with the final result. Today, Cholhouse Farmhouse stands as a strong example of farmhouse restoration in Devon. It demonstrates how careful planning and skilled workmanship can successfully restore even severely fire-damaged historic buildings.
