RM Builders and Contractors were proud to contribute to the Exeter Cathedral conservation works, a project that reflects a carefully considered response to one of Britain’s most significant medieval buildings. Completed in 2025, the scheme forms part of the Exeter Cathedral 2020s Development Appeal and supports the long-term care of this important historic site.
The Exeter Cathedral conservation project was delivered through close collaboration between the Cathedral team, professional consultants, heritage bodies and specialist contractors. As a result, every stage of the work was informed by both technical expertise and a detailed understanding of the building’s architectural and historical significance.
RM Builders’ involvement focused on key elements within the Quire. This included the installation of a new high altar, along with the careful replacement of timber elements. In addition, we carried out works to improve underfloor heating and installed a new Quire floor incorporating the Jubilee Pavement.
The new tiled floor draws inspiration from the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott. In particular, it reflects the historic tiled schemes introduced during his 19th-century restoration of the cathedral. Consequently, the new design sits comfortably within the building’s wider architectural history while also meeting modern performance requirements.
Working within a structure of exceptional complexity required a conservation-led approach at every stage. Therefore, careful consideration was given to historic fabric, material compatibility and the ongoing liturgical function of the space. Each intervention was designed to support both the building’s significance and its continued use.
