PAIGNTON CHURCH
Church of St John the Baptist Marldon Heritage Renovation
RM Builders & Contractors carried out a major heritage renovation in Devon, Cornwall and surrounding counties at the Church of St John the Baptist in Marldon, near Paignton. This Grade I listed building holds centuries of history. Records show a church on the site as early as the 12th century. The existing tower dates to around 1400 and was built by William Gilbert. His son Otto later rebuilt much of the church in 1348.
Because of its historic importance, this project required great care. It also offered a rare chance to help preserve an important part of Devon’s heritage.
Our brief was to complete a full refurbishment of the church. At the same time, we needed to introduce modern facilities for everyday use. We focused on protecting the building’s original character and atmosphere. As a result, we balanced modern upgrades with strict conservation requirements.
We completed a wide range of works as part of this heritage renovation. First, we removed the existing timber staircase and restored access using the original stone tower staircase. We then lifted and repaired the floors before installing new Devon stone tiles.
We also installed a new heating system to improve comfort. In addition, we created fully compliant disabled WC access. Throughout the project, we carefully removed and stored historic loose fixtures. Larger features, including altars, tombs, medieval screens, plaques and stained glass windows, were protected at all times.
Every stage of this heritage renovation required careful planning. We worked with attention to detail and respect for the building’s history. This approach ensured we preserved both the structure and its significance.
Today, the Church of St John the Baptist stands restored and ready for modern use. The building now offers improved facilities while retaining its historic character. It continues to serve as an active place of worship for the local community.
RM Builders & Contractors are proud to have played a key role in this project. Our work helped safeguard an important historic building for future generations.
