RM Builders & Contractors completed a major heritage restoration Devon at Butchers Hall in Tavistock. This Grade II listed building stands beside the historic Pannier Market and dates back to the 1860s. Originally built for the Seventh Duke of Bedford, it remains an important part of the town’s history. As part of the Tavistock Townscape Heritage Initiative, we carried out a full conservation and refurbishment of this landmark building.

This heritage restoration Devon and surrounding counties project required careful planning and attention to detail. Because of the building’s age, we focused on preserving original materials wherever possible. At the same time, we introduced modern improvements to support current use. Our team completed the work on time and to a high standard. As a result, the project received the 2019 Devon Historic Buildings Trust Conservation Award.

The scope of works included a range of specialist conservation tasks. We used DOFF cleaning to restore historic surfaces safely. In addition, we carried out dry rot treatment and completed targeted structural repairs. These works helped stabilise the building while protecting its original fabric.

We also restored key features throughout the building. This included repairing original blood channels within the flooring so they matched the surrounding surfaces. We completed brickwork repairs, installed quarry tiles in keeping with the original design, and fitted new iron railings. Each element was carefully matched to maintain the building’s historic appearance.

Modern upgrades were integrated with care. We installed new mechanical and electrical systems while limiting disruption to the structure. Lighting upgrades using Glacier and Collingwood systems improved the interior. In addition, we installed a new sliding glass entrance that complemented the building’s design.
